Fremont patient asks, “Which acne treatment works best?”

Best acne treatment Fremont - lady after acne treatment Acne, also referred to as pimples, are often associated with the teenage years. Myths that chocolate or greasy foods contribute to the condition may play in to that stereotype. The most common skin disease in the United States, acne can affect people of any age, usually occurring in the face, chest, back, or shoulders. It is estimated that 40 to 50 million people suffer from the disorder at any given time. Acne is influenced by hormonal fluctuations such as those experienced by teenagers during puberty or by women during pregnancy. The number of adult women with acne has been steadily increasing, although the reason is not quite clear. While many people think that acne needs to simply run its course, the condition is best treated in a several ways.

The Center for Dermatology Cosmetic and Laser Surgery, with offices in Milpitas and Fremont, CA, has been serving Bay Area families since 1965. Our board-certified physicians specialize in advanced medical, surgical, laser, and cosmetic dermatology and clinical research.

We understand the emotional impact that acne may have on a patient, including loss of self-esteem and confidence, as well as dissatisfaction with his or her appearance. When left untreated, or if a patient scratches or picks at acne lesions, permanent scarring may result.

What is acne?

More than simply pimples, acne presents in various ways such as blackheads, whiteheads, nodules, cysts, papules, and pustules.

Sebaceous glands are tiny endocrine glands, found on the skin, which emit an oily substance known as sebum. When excess sebum is produced, it clogs skin pores and hair follicles, which also contain dead skin cells. Sebum causes the skin cells to stick together and traps them in the pores. This process is further complicated by the bacteria that exist on the surface of the skin and may lead to inflammation of the pores. It is challenging to identify the exact causes of acne but the disease is influenced by certain factors like genetics, hormones, pore size, bacteria, industrial chemicals, medications, and cosmetics, to name a few.

Sunil Dhawan, MD, Robert Roth, MD, and Shurong Chang, MD, PhD, and our dermatology clinicians emphasize a triple approach to acne treatment: clearing breakouts, eliminating scars, and preventing future episodes. After a comprehensive consultation with our physicians, we will customize an individualized treatment plan, which may involve:

  • At-home care and cleaning
  • Topical prescription creams
  • Oral medication
  • Chemical and laser peels or microdermabrasion
  • Vbeam or Broadband Light (BBL) laser
  • Subcision or dermal grafting
