Fremont, California area doctor describes skin mole removal

California Area Doctor Describes Skin Mole Removal
It is not unusual for men and women to have moles. Moles, also called nevi, are areas on the skin where melanocytes have bundled together. Melanocytes are cells of pigmentation. Moles vary in color and are usually harmless. However, removal may be desired for patients in the area of Fremont, California who want them gone for cosmetic purposes.

How are moles removed from the skin?

Skin mole removal is done right in the office of the Center for Dermatology Cosmetic and Laser Surgery. This procedure can be done in various ways, depending on the location of the mole and if it needs to be preserved for biopsy. In most situations, a simple perpendicular shave removal may be performed. This is done for deep moles. Smaller moles, or moles that are more superficial, can be removed with shave removal. A special instrument is used to do this quickly and easily.

How do I know if a mole needs a biopsy?

Biopsies are sometimes performed on moles because they can help the dermatologist diagnose serious issues such as skin cancer. Skin cancer can be treated if caught early enough for intervention. There are certain changes that happen to a mole that can indicate the possibility of skin cancer. These changes include unusual:
  • Size
  • Shape
  • Color
  • symptoms

If patients notice changes to existing moles, it is important to have them evaluated by a dermatological professional. This should be done in addition to annual skin cancer screenings to monitor for changes. Growths on the skin such as skin tags, moles, and warts should always be examined by a dermatologist.

Cosmetic mole removal is available with our dermatological team!
