The Mohs procedure suitable for many cases from the Milpitas, CA area

Skin cancer is a real concern in today's society. So much so that millions of people are staying out of the sun far more than they would have a few decades ago. Though there is the potential for skin cancer to have grave effects, there is also a very good possibility for a positive outcome with early treatment. The physicians at the Center for Dermatology Cosmetic and Laser Surgery have the advanced skills to help you determine if a suspicious lesion is skin cancer. We also offer the best possible treatment for skin cancer, including the Mohs micrographic surgery procedure. With offices in Milpitas and Fremont, CA, we serve a wide area.

What is Mohs?

There are several options for the removal of skin cancer lesions. To date, none can match the efficiency of Mohs micrographic surgery. This procedure has the highest rate of success and is completed with smaller scars than other removal methods. Its precision makes it an excellent option for the removal of ill-defined tumors, large-sized, tumors, those in visible locations, and also for recurrent tumors.

The Mohs procedure is very sophisticated, with your surgeon able to view the entire edge of each margin rather than just a sample. This delicate technique must be performed with a great deal of attention to detail, which is why Mohs surgeons have received extensive training in this process.

What to expect

The first step in treatment is to examine a small sample of tissue under a microscope to confirm the type of skin cancer present. If Mohs seems like the best option to remove the confirmed skin cancer, we will arrange an appointment with our Mohs surgeon. The procedure itself is completed in stages, with layers of skin cells removed and examined a bit at a time. Due to the nature of this process, a good portion of the day may be spent in our office.

After a layer of cells is removed, it is examined immediately by the Mohs surgeon while the patient waits comfortably. The removal of subsequent layers is guided by the location of existing cancer cells in the layer under examination. Larger growths, then, can take quite a bit of time to examine layer by layer. Compared to standard excision removal, the Mohs technique does take longer. The precision of removal, however, is what gives Mohs its outstanding success rate with minimal scarring and a low risk of recurrence.
